Side effects are all of a drug’s effects besides its main effect. In most cases, drug manufacturers are aware of a drug’s side effects before it is released to the public. This information is included in pharmacies’ drug information handouts, and should be included with your prescription. Side effects are different from risk factors, in that risk factors are typically more rare and serious, and they often appear with extended use of a drug.

Minor Side Effects of Vioxx

Side effects range from mild to severe, yet most patients find minor side effects to be manageable as long as they are experiencing significant relief.

upper respiratory infection

nausea

dizziness

diarrhea

headache

fatigue

heartburn

rash

Major Side Effects of Vioxx

insomnia

inability to urinate

chest pain

Allergic Reaction to Vioxx

Vioxx contains sulfur, a common allergen. Although Vioxx is not technically considered a sulfonamide drug, those with an allergy to sulfa drugs should not take any medication containing sulfur, due to the risk of allergic reaction. This drug may also cause an allergic reaction in patients with a sensitivity to codeine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine, or oxycodone.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

rash

hives

trouble breathing

swelling of the throat, mouth, and/or tongue

severe dizziness

in severe cases, anaphylaxis
